Aurora Shores Rain Garden Planting
August 5, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Tinker’s Creek Watershed Partners has received funding from The William Bingham Foundation, through partnership with the Central Lake Erie Basin Collaborative (CLEB), to install different green infrastructure projects at Aurora Shores. Our first planting on June 1, consisted of planting American Sycamores and Swamp White Oaks along the canal, which will help stabilize the banks, prevent erosion, and help with flooding events. This second planting will consist of planting a rain garden which can help reduce localized flooding, standing water issues and stormwater runoff.
A rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials, rain gardens can be a cost effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies, song birds and other wildlife.
So this August 5 join us as we plant 500 native plants and flowers for Aurora Shores new rain garden! Please come for as little or as long as you can, we will be there from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Learn how to plant a rain garden, what plants to choose and why, and the benefits of rain gardens when dealing with stormwater issues. No experience is required, after this you will be rain garden masters! Soil, mulch, fencing, and tools will all be provided. We have snacks and water available too but please register before so we know how much to bring.
Children under 18 must have adult supervision. Please dress for the weather, and wear long sleeves and pants! Please wear shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy. Some gloves and water provided, but feel free to bring your own.
