The Urban Forest in America’s Cities: Connecting People and Nature
November 1, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
The Levin College Forum Program is offering an important and exciting speaker on November 1, 2018. The event is focused on trees, vibrant greenspace and cities and is our contribution to the Sustainable 2019 Year of Vibrant Greenspace. The keynote speaker is Jill Jonnes, who will speak about her new book Urban Forests: A Natural History of Trees and People in the American Cityscape. The book presents a wonderful history of the role and importance of trees and the urban forest canopy to our cities and our history.
A panel of local experts will participate in an interactive discussion about what is happening in greater Cleveland related to trees, tree canopy and urban forests as these related to water management, health and quality of life. Audience questions will be included. Copies of Ms. Jonnes’ book will be available for purchase and Ms. Jonnes will be signing books directly after the event. Light refreshments will be provided.
Jill Jonnes is the author of several books on the history and dynamics of cities: Eiffel’s Tower, Conquering Gotham, Empires of Light and South Bronx Rising. She attended Barnard College and the Columbia School of Journalism and worked as a journalist writing stories for the New York Times and other publications. As a staff member to the 2010 National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, she authored the first chapter of the report to the president: Deep Water: The Gulf Oil Disaster and the Future of Offshore Drilling. Ms. Jonnes studied trees as green infrastructure at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. and has been a National Endowment for the Humanities scholar. She is founder of the Baltimore Tree Trust and a Maryland Master Naturalist.
The forum program is free and open to the public, but an RSVP at https://www.csuohio.edu/urban/forum/forum to attend would be most helpful. The Levin College is located at 1717 Euclid Avenue at Cleveland State University.
